Portland crews put out fire at ESCO plant
www.oregonlive.com
A fire that broke out about 7:45 tonight at a large industrial foundry in
Northwest Portland has been extinguished, the Portland Fire Bureau
said.
The fire began when a furnace in a small room at the Electric Steel
Co.'s foundry in the 2100 block of Northwest 25th Avenue malfunctioned,
catching fire and igniting other objects. The company makes steel and
iron castings.
ESCO "is probably one of the most heavy-duty industrial companies in
the city," said Lt. Allen Oswalt, a Fire Bureau spokesman. "They make
those huge steam buckets you see on the Discovery Channel. Massive
things, big as a room."
Oswalt said ESCO employees were well-versed
in safety procedures and helped firefighters put
the fire out within about 15 minutes after it was
reported.
